The human motor system has many different manifestations. It functions as an important mechanism in the individual's adaptation to the environment. Motor activity, such as motor learning, motor ontogeny, motor diagnostics and motor therapy are all highly respected areas of international research. At the international conference "Sport Kinetics '97" in Magdeburg (September 3-6, 1997) scientists from various countries reported on their latest research results on "Theories of Human Motor Performance and their Reflections in Practice". The conference proceedings are presented in two volumes: this book contains the lectures (main presentations and reports in the five study groups "Motor Behavior and Competitive Sports", "Motor Behavior and School Sport", "Motor Behavior and Rehabilitation", "Motor Behavior and Work", "Motor Behavior and Dance/Play of the Instrument". The posters presented at the conference are published in volume 2 of the proceedings (ISBN 3-88020-333-4). The editor, Peter Blaser, is professor for Sport Kinetics at the Institute for Sport Science of Otto-von-Guericke-University of Magdeburg.
