How was kingship negotiated beyond the borders of confession and religion? Sven Jaros addresses this question on the basis of the Polish conquest of Ruthenia, analyzing for the first time all of the documents written by the region’s rulers and their representatives. This case study from Eastern Europe provides a number of starting points for discussions about processes of negotiating sovereignty in late medieval Europe.
