Shortly after the Second World War began, hundreds of thousands of inhabitants of the border regions between Germany and France were evacuated. The book examines this first forced migration of the war with a focus on the companies in the evacuation zones. To what extent could they act autonomously under these exceptional circumstances? Based on this question, the study goes on to analyze the workings of German and French war-time society.
