This volume is the result of the conference on Carissa Aurelia and its microregion held in Madrid in February 2025. It focuses on one of the important Roman cities of the ancient conventus Gaditanus in Baetica: the city of Carissa Aurelia, situated in the Guadalete Valley, and its immediate surroundings. For the first time, this publication brings together early scholarship with more recent research on Carissa Aurelia and its neighbouring settlements from an interdisciplinary point of view. The individual contributions draw on historical data, contemporary fieldwork, and scientific analyses to examine the region from antiquity through to the Islamic period. At the same time, they offer initial insights into an ›ancient microregion‹ in the south of the Iberian Peninsula, which has thus far remained largely terra incognita in the research landscape. This is the first book-length publication devoted entirely to the archaeological site of Carissa Aurelia.
